What AI is (in one kitchen metaphor)
Think of a very fast assistant who has read a huge pile of books, WhatsApp chats, menus, and news — but has never stood in your shop, your classroom, or your home.
- It is good at drafts: a WhatsApp reply, a caption, a summary of long notes, a first version of an email.
- It is bad at knowing your real price, your real stock, your real patient, or whether a rumour is true.
- It does not “understand” you the way a friend does. It predicts useful next words. That is still enough to save hours — if you stay in charge.
You are the shop owner. AI is the helper who can chop onions very fast. You still taste the jhalmuri before you serve it.
What AI is not
- It is not magic, and it is not a government form that will reject you if your English is imperfect.
- It is not a replacement for a doctor, a CA, a lawyer, or your own judgement.
- It is not only for people in Bengaluru product teams. A tuition teacher in Siliguri and a salon owner in Howrah can use the same tools.
- It is not one app. ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI inside WhatsApp, Copilot — different doors, similar idea.

Lesson 1 — What AI actually is (and what it is not)
Open any chat AI. Type: “Explain GST in simple Hindi with one example of a clothes shop.” Read the answer. Then ask: “Now make it even simpler, for a Class 10 student.”
Notice what happened. You did not install a server. You asked, it drafted, you judged.
That is the whole skill. The model is a pattern machine. Your job is to give it context (who you are, who the reader is, what language, how long) and to check the facts that matter — dates, prices, medical or legal claims, anything you would be ashamed to send wrongly.
Practice: pick one confusing thing from your week. Ask AI to explain it “as if I am 15, with one example from Indian daily life, under 150 words.” Save the answer you like.
Lesson 2 — Talk to AI like you talk to a good shop assistant
A weak prompt: “Write a caption.” A useful prompt: “I run a small jewellery shop in Siliguri. Write 3 WhatsApp status lines in Hinglish for a new silver collection. Warm, not filmy. Under 25 words each. End with ‘WhatsApp for photos’.”
You would not walk into a shop and only say “give.” You say what you need, for whom, in what language, and how you will use it.
Four parts of a good prompt:
- Who you are — student, teacher, salon, clinic, boutique.
- The job — reply, caption, plan, explain, translate.
- The constraints — language, length, tone, emoji yes/no.
- The raw material — paste the customer message, the notes, the offer.
Practice: take a real message you sent last week. Ask AI to rewrite it warmer and shorter. Keep your voice. You are not trying to sound like a call centre.

Lesson 3 — Prompts that get work done — WhatsApp, school, office
AI is most useful on boring, repeating work.
- Shop: welcome reply, price list, “we are closed”, festival wish, gentle follow-up. Start with templates, then ask AI to tune them to your city and items.
- Study: “Turn these notes into 7 one-line points and 3 questions.” Then close the phone and answer the questions yourself. AI that writes your homework for you is a trap; AI that helps you understand is a teacher.
- Office / freelance: first draft of an email, a meeting summary, a polite reminder.

- Students: paste a paragraph from a textbook, ask for a simple explanation plus one everyday example.
- Teachers: ask for 5 discussion questions for tomorrow’s class, in the language you teach.
- Shop: generate one Instagram caption with the caption generator, then edit two words so it sounds like you.
Lesson 4 — Use AI on your phone, in Hindi and Bangla
You do not need a startup office. Most of this works on a normal Android phone.
- ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot all handle Hindi, Hinglish and Bangla if you ask in that language and say so clearly.
- Meta AI sits inside WhatsApp on many accounts — useful for rewriting a rushed reply before you send.
- Voice typing in Gboard is enough. Speak Hinglish. Then tell AI: “Clean this up, keep my meaning, do not make it corporate.”
Practice: dictate a messy voice note about your day. Ask AI to turn it into (a) a to-do list and (b) one polite WhatsApp message you actually need to send.
If a tool only works well in English for you, that is a tool problem, not a you problem. Try another door. The free tools page is a map, not a ranking contest.
Lesson 5 — When to DIY, when to get a human (especially if you run a shop)
DIY is enough when:
- You send a few WhatsApp chats a day and can reply within an hour.
- You want help writing, not a system that runs at 11 pm without you.
- You are learning, teaching, or exploring.
You probably want a human to set things up when:
- Enquiries come in while you are with a patient, a client in the chair, or at the counter.
- Follow-ups to old customers never happen because the day ends.
- Festival posts go out late or not at all.
- You have no interest in becoming a part-time software person.

- Wednesday: one real message improved with AI, then sent by you.
- Friday: one thing you still do not understand — ask AI, then ask a human if it sounds shaky.
